Laguna Hot Spring Capital of the Philippines

The Province of Laguna found in the CALABARZON region in Luzon. Its capital is Santa Cruz and the province is located southeast ofMetro Manila, south of the province of Rizal, west of Quezon, north of Batangas and east of Cavite. Laguna hugs the southern shores of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the country. The city with the highest population (based on 2010 census) is Calamba, while the least populated is theMunicipality of Famy.

Laguna is notable as the birthplace of Jose Rizal, the country’s national hero. It is also famous for attractions like Pagsanjan Falls, the University of the Philippines Los Baños campus, the hot spring resorts of Los Baños and Calamba on the slopes of Mount MakilingPila historic town plaza, Taytay Falls in Majayjay, the wood carvings and papier-mâché created by the people of Paeté, the annual Sampaguita Festival in San Pedro, the turumba of Pakil, the tsinelas footwears from Liliw, the Pandan Festival of Luisiana, the Seven Lakes of San Pablo (the first city in the province), and the Hidden Valley Springs in Calauan.

Calamba City is where me and my husband is trying to build our own family. We relocated here last March, 2013. Both of us was raised in the Metro and we were actually clueless on how life will be, living in the “province”. Surprisingly, Laguna turned out to be a not so “province” as it is labeled. Laguna is called as the Detroit of the Philippines because of the presence of major vehicle manufacturers in the city of Santa Rosa. It is also considered as the Silicon Valley of the Philippines because of the vast number of electronic and semi-conductor companies operating in the province. Laguna is also the Resort Capital of the Philippines for it houses more than 700 hot spring resorts in the areas of Calamba and Los Baños

There are a lot of things to discover on this new-found home town of ours. And to help promote this, I decided to feature 1 major attraction each week. I am hoping you, my followers will join me as I take this journey on discovering this land where me and my husband will build a foundation for our kids future.

This Water Park is sure to give you an accelerating experience your family will not forget. Me and my Family were invited to the place Last February as my husband’s Company celebrated their Anniversary.  We arrived late in the evening for we are part of the advance party and the whole place was so quiet.  The staff gave us a warm reception and assisted us to our room promptly. Our room was prepared nicely and comfy. We had to immediately rest for the night because a lot of activities were scheduled the next day.

We started the day around 7am and breakfast was already being prepared. After our breakfast, the kids was so eager to dive into the pool. But unfortunately for them, the staff was doing their daily routine of cleaning the whole water park before the quests started coming in. While the staff was doing their business, we took a tour of the resort.

The kids had so much fun during our stay and ask if we can go back 🙂 They even had a chance to dance with “Jollibee” while their father hosted the event.

I’ve always been curious what Yoga can really do for me if ever I would engage myself in this type of practice. So I decided to research about it first and here’s what I’ve learned.

Before You Start: Staying Safe While Practicing Yoga

Even though for most healthy people yoga is a safe non-aerobic form of exercise, it is not without its risks. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the yoga injuries most commonly treated  in emergency rooms involve over stretching and strain from repetition to the:

  • neck
  • shoulders
  • spine
  • legs
  • knees

Also, certain poses can increase your risk of injury if you have conditions such as:

  • severe osteoporosis
  • high or low blood pressure
  • ear problems
  • problems with your spine
  • pregnancy (including risks to your unborn child)

Here are some tips to help you reduce your risk of injury from yoga:

If you are pregnant or have a pre-existing health condition: Consult your health care provider before starting a yoga program. Your health care provider can help you know how to judge what type and level of yoga exercise is safe for you.

Don’t try learning yoga on your own. Work with an experienced and credentialed instructor to learn the proper way to perform the exercises and avoid injury.

Yoga is not a substitute for medical care. Yoga offers many health benefits and may even be included as part of some treatment plans. But it’s still important to work closely with your regular health care providers and get proper treatment when you need it.

Know your limits and stay within them. Before beginning any new type of yoga, ask about its physical demands. Find out how strenuous it is. Talk with the instructor and others who do that type of yoga to be sure it’s suitable for you.

Go slow. You’re not in competition with anyone else in the class. Learn the basics, such as proper breathing and how to maintain balance, before you attempt the more ambitious stretches.

Warm up properly before every session. Cold muscles increase your chance of injury.

Wear proper clothing. Wear clothes that allow you to move freely.

Ask questions. If you don’t understand an exercise, ask to see it again before you attempt it yourself,

Stay hydrated. That’s especially important if you are practicing what’s called “hot” yoga, which is done in a very warm and humid room.

Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Yoga isn’t supposed to hurt. If you feel pain, stop. If the pain persists, see your health care provider. Stop immediately if you have chest pain, feel faint or overheated, or become dizzy. Get immediate medical help if the sensation continues after you stop.

It is easy to start on something. But before you do, make sure you are prepared and your body is healthy enough to undergo such activity. Yoga is good, but you need to make sure that you are fit enough to do it 🙂

Avocado or Alligator Pear

The Avocado is colloquially known as the Alligator Pear, reflecting its shape and the leather-like appearance of its skin. Avocado is derived from the Aztec word ‘ahuacatl.’

I never imagine this fruit is so nutritious. My parents have several tree of avocado growing on their backyard, and when the fruit is in season they would prepare some for us.  We would have it as dessert, Avocado sliced in a bowl with ice, milk and sugar. Now a days, I see it being used in mouth-watering recipes and made as a dressing for salads and sandwiches. Here in the Philippines, we have an Avocado flavored Ice cream which my kids love.

I bet there are a lot of recipe that might interest you, so go on and browse the net for these wonderful and healthy recipes made from Avocado.

Okra or Lady’s Fingers

Would you believe that Okra is an integral member of the Cotton family? This worldwide used versatile vegetable called okra is characterized by green color, elongated and tapering ridged pods infused with double row of seeds and slimy texture when cut open.

Okra is one of my fave vegetables. While most people hate it because of its slimy texture, I love it. My parents used to grow them in our backyard when I was still a child and they trained us to eat it. Among st my siblings, I was the only one who embrace this very healthy vegetable and I fell in love with it 🙂

Besides being low in calories it is aplenty with vitamins of the category A, Thiamin, B6, C, folic acid, riboflavin, calcium, zinc and dietary fiber. Eating okra is much recommended for pregnant woman besides other for it is rich in folic acid which is essential in the neural tube formation of the fetus during 4-12 weeks of gestation period in the mother’s womb.

  • The mucilage and fiber found in okra helps adjust blood sugar by regulating its absorption in the small intestine.
  • The fiber of okra has many superior qualities in maintaining the health of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • It helps reabsorb water and traps excess cholesterol, metabolic toxins and surplus bile in its mucilage and slips it out through the stool. Due to greater percentage of water in the bulk it thereby prevents constipation, gas and bloating in the abdomen.
  • It is an ideal vegetable for weight loss and is storehouse of health benefits provided it is cooked over low flame to retain its properties. This also to ensure that the invaluable mucilage contained in it is not lost to high heat.
